A NEW Approach to Cat Litter (No more LITTER Tracking!) | The Cat Butler
So, it doesnt smell like cat urine, but it doesnt cover up the poop smell. And my cat has managed to get it everywhere just like regular litter. I do like that theres less scoping and its lighter, but Im not sure Im going to continue after Im through with what I bought. Becca K. I only have 1 cat and clean it out daily and move it around after each visit. Ive only had the first bag in for 2 weeks and it is really starting to smell. I am going to have to change it. I wont be able to get a month use out of 1 bag which is disappointing due to the price. Vicky G. Fresh Step Clean Paws Clumping Cat Litter Best OverallThe Fresh Step 32397 Clean Paws Clumping Litter is another clay formula that comes in an 18.5-, 34.2-, or 37-pound bag. This is a low-scent cat litter that is soft on your cats paws, plus it will reduce and eliminate foul-odors from the box. Not only that, but the odor-control lasts for almost a week. Be advised that the Fresh Step formula does not clump as well as others. Not to mention, it is not as absorbent. Though it is light and easy to change out, you will have to do so more often with this brand. You should also consider that this option has some dust. It can also track through your home. Beyond that, this is a safe and non-toxic option for keeping your litter box fresh. Made from natural clay material, it will naturally absorb moisture, though as mentioned, it is not as effective as others. It clumps into hard lumps when used, making it less likely to be tracked and easier to scoop. It is a low-dust option as well. This helps keep the area around the litter box clean and can improve the overall air quality when your cat or kitten uses the box. This litter is ideal for kittens around 8 weeks old and older. Younger kittens may want to try tasting the litter, which can be harmful if they ingest a clumping litter. Some reviewers used it with younger kittens with no issues, but you should always be extra vigilant when they are still learning to use the litter box. The size and texture of the litter is specially designed for the smaller paws of kittens. It also has an herbal attractant that helps kittens know where to go. Some reviewers said that it has a distinct odor but most still prefer this to other litters. Low dust, absorption is excellent, the price cant be beat! said one reviewer who uses Dr. Elseys litters for her adult cats as well. No other litter for us! ProsCons Arm & Hammer Easy Clean![]() Our next option uses the power of baking soda to eliminate odors in your litter box. The Arm & Hammer 20505679 Easy Clean-Up Clumping Litter is a clay-based formula that will keep smells from urine, feces, and other organic materials at bay. Available in a 37-pound bag, the Arm & Hammer litter creates tight clumps. It is very absorbent, and it will not dry on the sides of your cat box. Whats more, this non-tracking cat litter has a fresh light scent, plus it is safe for your cats paw pads. Be advised, however, that it is not as good at not sticking to the bottom of your pets feet and it gets stuck in between their toes. Other than that, this litter is soft against your furballs paws, so they will not get any scratches or nicks. Keep in mind though, there is more dust kick-back with this option. Also, it can be heavy when wet. The Purina 12118666 Tidy Cats Non-Clumping Cat Litter is available in a 10-, 20-, or 30-pound bag. This is a non-clumping formula that is designed to slide right off the pan when it is time to clean. It is recommended that you clean solid waste daily with this type, so it is not always the most popular choice. That being said, you will not find a lot of tracking with this clay litter. The Purina is designed for multi-cat homes, yet unfortunately, the odor control and absorption leaves a lot to be desired. Not only that, but this litter is heavy when saturated, so those who cannot lift heavy items would not be happy with this product. Read Also: Do Kittens Lose Their Teeth Flaws But Not DealbreakersThe most obvious downside of Dr. Elseys Ultra is its container. Though this litter is sometimes sold in small boxes, the lowest price is found on a 40-pound plastic bag from Amazon. Out of all the containers that litter comes in, a plastic bag is the hardest to seal, and isnt as easy to stow away as a box or a plastic bin. That 40-pound plastic bag is twice as heavy as other litters, which come in 20-, 30-, or 40-pound cardboard-box containers that are easier to lift and store. Pet owners with minimal arm strength may have difficulty pouring Dr. Elseys Ultra into a pan, so we recommend transferring some of the litter into an easy-pour container or using a large kibble scooper that you store in the bag. Or you can grab one of Dr. Elseys 18-pound bags, which cost 7 extra cents per pound. Dr. Elseys Ultra fell in the middle of the pack in our cleanability tests because it can leave sticky messes at the bottom of the pan. Its average-size granules dont pack as tightly as tinier granules, like those in the Arm & Hammer Cloud Control Clumping Litter, so more moisture can get to the bottom of the litter box. Dr. Elseys Ultra performed about as well as two cheaper litters we tested: the Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Clumping Litter and the Frisco Scoopable Cat Litter. If you are willing to pay a premium for harder clumps that wont stick to the bottom of a dirty pan, try our other pick, the Arm & Hammer Cloud Control Clumping Litter. Our Cat Litter Testing MethodologyI tested the cat litters in two phases: a pre-cat phase and a cat phase. First, I compared litters belonging to the same category in heats of four at a time, assessing them for a variety of factors, including clumping ability, dustiness, scent, and texture. The top two litters in each heat went on to the next phase. Each one was poured into a litter pan for the cats to use for anywhere from one to four weeks to test for odor control and tracking. Litters that were tested for two weeks or less were those that my cats refused to use or those we tested prior to receiving the bulk of the litters for this guide. For each litter, I considered the following qualities: You May Like: How Old Should A Kitten Be To Adopt What Size And How Many Litter Boxes Do I NeedA litter box should be at least 1.5 times the length of a cat, large enough for them to comfortably scratch and bury their waste. The standard rule of thumb is to have one litter box per cat plus one extra, and ideally one on each floor of a home. A home with multiple cats, however, may be able to get away with fewer extra-large litter boxes as long as they are cleaned at least twice a day, according to Sueda. See our guide to the best litter boxes for more on this. How Much Is Pretty Litter

Top 13 Best Cat Litters (We Tested Them All)
As every good cat owner knows, every kitty is unique. So how do you choose a litter box to suit your own cats preferences? There are a few factors youll need to consider. What kind of cat litter box would you prefer to have, and how much upkeep does it take? Youll need to get a box thats only as high maintenance as you can handle. Youll also need to consider your cats personal preferences, the age of your cat, and the convenience of the cat litter box. For instance, if your cat values privacy, then having a hooded litter box can give your kitty the privacy they need, right inside your house. However, if youre a cat owner with very little time on your hands, then providing your kitty with a disposable litter box might be the best option. This may take the hassle out of cleaning it. Another excellent option for busy cat owners is a self-cleaning litter box for your cat. This litter box automatically removes waste, so theres no need for you to scoop, clean, or refill the litter box after use. If your cat is particularly fussy, why not allow your pet the combination of privacy and cleanliness in a hooded self-cleaning litter box. This box allows your kitty to slip inside unseen to do their business in privacy, and it cleans it itself. Which means less scooping and cleaning for you as the owner. Best Paper Cat LitterÖkocat’s Non-Clumping Paper Pellet Litter is the most absorbent of all paper litters we tested and produces virtually no dust. Pros: Made of sustainably sourced paper pellets, free of dyes and synthetic chemicals, very little dust, biodegradable, pellets are soft and less than 1 inch long, unscented Cons: Expensive, some cats do not like using a pellet-style litter Paper litters, most of which come in the form of small, firm pellets, can be good for cats with respiratory problems. Of the five paper varieties I evaluated, Ökocat’s Paper Pellet Litter performed best in my first round of testing. It absorbed liquid quickly and the paper pellets did not immediately fall apart. The pellets were the softest and smallest of the paper litters, making them more compatible with a cat’s natural scratching, digging, and burying behaviors than brands with heavier, larger pellets. This litter does not clump. Instead, the paper pellets absorb as much liquid as they can before falling apart and turning into a sort of mulch. Scooping is only necessary for solids. Neither of my cats were willing to use the paper litters, so I can’t speak to how well Ökocat controls odors or holds up over time. It is clear from the weight and shape of the litter that the pellets are very low tracking compared to smaller-grained clay and natural varieties. While the litter isn’t dust-free, it is close. The pellets are also biodegradable and unscented. Use And Disposal Of LitterFilling Fill the tray with Cats Best cat litter up to a height of 5-7 cm. Top 10 Best Cat Litter Boxes of 2021 (We Tested Them All)
Wirecutter contributing writer Gregory Han swears by the odor-absorbing properties of silica gel litter, and he has used So Phresh Scoopable Cat Litter for nearly a decade. Guests have remarked our apartment does not smell like the usual small space, multi-pet abode, and most importantly the cats seem to like the sodium silicate best, he writes in Apartment Therapy. Han notes that silica gel litter tends not to track as far outside the litter box as some clay litters hes tried. For one of his cats who spent a lot of time scraping at the litter box, the dust from clay was a problem too. Han admits that So Phresh is pricey , and he says it works best with a layer of baking soda added to the bottom of the litter pan . Unlike silica with bigger crystals or pearls, the So Phresh silica is small enough that it coats poop reasonably well, though it does get a little yellow from cat pee. It’s popular because it promises to be virtually dust-free and very effective at absorbing urine and controlling odor. We did a deep analysis of a popular brand of silica gel litterPretty Litterand found some pretty shocking results. In our research, we found that there are two types of silica: crystalline and amorphous silica. Confusingly, cat litter made from silica gel is generally made from amorphous silica. We were unable to find any cat litters claiming to be made from dangerous crystalline silica However, crystal cat litter isn’t without its own potential risks.
In our analysis of Pretty Litter, we found several anecdotal reports online of negative health impacts of this crystal litter, including a user video showing incredible amounts of dust created by handling it in the litter box. For this reason, we also do not recommend using crystal cat litter like Pretty Litter. What Clay Clumping Litters We Don’t Recommend
Don’t Miss: What Does It Mean When A Cat Winks What Is The Difference Between Scoopable And Clumping Cat LitterMany cat litter manufacturers use the terms scoopable and clumping interchangeably when discussing clay cat litters. Scoopable is the ability to remove cat waste, either urine or feces, with a cat litter scooper. Clumping refers to when cat urine is absorbed or dehydrated by clay or silica-based litter granules, and forms hard clumps that are easy to scoop. There are some types of cat litter that are only scoopable, not clumpable, like pine litters and recycled paper litters. How Often Should You Clean Your Litter BoxSo let’s get to the nitty-gritty here. “If you have one cat, you should clean it once a week. Most people stretch it. Scoop it twice a day and clean once a week, is a good general rule,” said Fox. The best way to clean it is using “warm water and unscented soap, or an enzyme spray cleaner. Cats are super sensitive to smell,” said Fox. “Most people have an uncovered regular litter box. I like the ones cats can jump in and get in and have privacy. I love the way it looks and theres no litter everywhere. Any change needs to be gradual.” For more recommendations, check out: Also Check: Does My Kitten Have Worms Most Innovative Litter Box For Multiple CatsIn households with multiple cats, you probably also deal with lots of different personalities and preferences. The majority of purebred kittens are the product of irresponsible “backyard” kitten breeders. These are people who make some easy cash by breeding their purebred cats and they often also sell kittens through the newspaper classified ads. Remember that most of these backyard kitten breeders don’t know about breeding for favorable health and temperament qualities, and they don’t know how to raise a properly socialized litter. Many of these little kittens are weaned from their mothers way too soon. Sometimes, a backyard kitten breeder turns into small-time kitten mill to increase their supply so you can buy a kitten from a pet store and they can make a higher profit. How can you stop kitten mills? There is only one way. Take away their profits. Remember before you buy a kitten, keep in mind adoption is the most humane option! How To Pick The Right Kittens For Sale Near MeIf you find a kitten for sale nearby, you should take advantage of the proximity and visit. If the litter of kittens is purebred, try to see one or both parents. At the very least, assess how well the breeder takes care of the animals on the property. Even a casual breeder should have clean facilities, and the kittens should look healthy, active, and unsoiled. Beware of kittens that are too thin, sneezing, or have any nasal discharge. Kittens commonly have soft stool or diarrhea. Ask the owners whether any issues you see have been addressed by a medical professional. Also, check the deworming and vaccination schedule. Some kittens may have their first set of boosters before you take one home, but many will not. Rescues and humane societies are also a good places to obtain kittens for sale because they usually take care of the first set of vaccinations and administer a deworming treatment. Here we will look at the different places where you can get a cat and what to look for. Age Of Kittens For AdoptionCats do not seem particularly social, especially compared to dogs. This makes bonding with their mothers and littermates more important. You may not be able to fill social gaps as easily for a kitten as for a puppy. Ideally, kittens should stay with their siblings until they are 12 weeks old, although their mother will likely wean them between six and eight weeks of age. Kittens are usually still grabbing an occasional nursing session from mom up to ten weeks old. Beyond that, the queen continues teaching crucial skills to her kittens. Young cats learn a lot by watching. Moreover, cats emit pheromones that soothe the young and place them in a mental state conducive to education. Kittens who leave the nest too early, so to speak, can develop behavioral challenges. Some common issues are persistent suckling on inanimate objects, social miscues around other cats, the inability to groom adequately, or lack of knowledge about using a litter box or even burying waste at all. Kittens can grow up shy and may deal with their fear through aggression. Don’t Miss: Can Cats Be Allergic To Dogs Should I Get More Than One CatCats have very different social needs compared to dogs and people. Although they are capable of forming friendships with other cats, they’re unlikely to feel the need for a companion and are often happy being the only cat in the home. This is not to say that they cant get along with other cats. Many cats can learn to accept each other and some will even form close bonds. A good way to help them out is to make sure there is no competition for important resources, such as: If you do want to get a pair of kittens, then siblings have a better chance of getting along. If you’re looking for older cats, it’s best to get a pair that already have a close bond. A rescue centre will be able to give you this information. How you introduce a new cat or kitten into your home can make a big difference too! Preparing Your Home For A Kitten
Learn How Baby Kittens Grow: 0-8 Weeks!
What You NeedFree kittens and those you purchase from a breeder or rescue do not differ in their basic needs. FoodKittens feed differently depending upon their age when they come home with you. Up to four weeks of age, your kitten will be nursing on a bottle every two to three hours. At four weeks of age, you can start offering a gruel several times a day. You will still be bottle feeding, but every four hours. Begin the weaning process gradually between five and seven weeks. Dry food should be always available, and you should feed a gruel, canned food, or baby food with water four times a day. Onions are highly toxic to cats, so make sure the baby food does not have onion powder. It should also be meat-based and is only ideal for exceptionally picky eaters. By seven or eight weeks, your kitten will be effectively weaned and weigh approximately two pounds. Growing kittens require 50 to 65 calories per pound per day. Many times, the best way to deliver a high concentration of calories is via canned food which is high in protein and fat. Kittens should eat enough to be full but not bloated or distended in the abdomen. Cats are kittens until about a year old. Try to get a sample of the same food your kitten has already been eating. Make food changes gradually. Welcome To Our Bengal Music Cats LifeBengal cats are originally developed from crosses between the domestic cats and the Asian Leopard Cat. The domestic cats, with rosettes like the markings on Leopards, Jaguars and Ocelots, became the most popular of the cat breeds. The Bengal breed was accepted as a new breed in TICA in 1986 with referenced to the scientific name of the Asian Leopard Cat, Prionailurus bengalensis. The hybrid crosses are registered as Foundation and most noted for its luxurious short, soft coat which may appear in either the spotted or marble pattern. Bengals are very active and inquisitive cats, and often enjoy playing in water. Some of the Bengals are vocal while others are more quiet and selective about using their voice. They are generally confident, curious and devoted companions. They get along very well with other pets when properly introduced and enjoy being part of a family. How to Find a Lost Cat
Whether they are indoor or outdoor cats, our feline companions sometimes stray. There are many reasons why cats run away, but here are some common ones:
Whatever the reason, its quite common for cats to run away. So if you find yourself wondering where your missing cat is, you are not alone! Why Is My Cat Sitting Out In The RainAlthough most cats want to avoid getting wet, some enjoy being out in the rain. In fact, particular species of cat enjoy the water and actively seek it out. If your cat is a Maine coon, Turkish vans, or Bengal, for example, it may purposefully venture out and sit in the rain. Others cats may not prefer the rain but will enjoy how quiet and vacant the outdoors become as soon as a downpour begins. If your cat likes exploring backyards and sidewalks, a rainy season may be ideal for it. In that vein, your cat may be sitting in the rain because its actually hunting. It can be easier to capture prey during this time. The sound of rain can mask the sound of a cats footsteps, dramatically increasing its success rate. According to Animal Conservation, precipitation such as rain and snow influences the eating habits of feral cats. Thats because of what prey is available during those times. If youve newly adopted a stray, then it may be taking part in a well-trusted routine. Do Cats Get Sleepy When It RainsCats need to sleep for 12-16 hours a day, which is a hefty amount when compared to humans. It can seem like your cat gets sleepy when it rains, but that isnt the case. Cats dont get drowsy because of storms. Instead, they may get bored with the lack of outdoor activity and decide to rest as a way to pass the time. The barometric pressure or the humidity doesnt play a role. Having made it three-quarters of the way and now on the coast road, he arrived at the hotel only to realise the two cats were with him. The owner of the hotel invited Richard in, but Richard pointed out that he had the two cats with him. The owner very kindly suggested Richard bring them into the hotel bar with him, and so he did. Ronnie and Reggie comfortably curled up on one of the padded seats in the bar and proceeded to be petted by all the guests for the next two hours. When Richard went to leave, he simply called the cats and they willingly followed him all the way back home again, stopping at kerbs and waiting for cars to invite them to cross the roads, at which point they followed Richard trustingly over. They all arrived home safely and were none the worse for their adventure. Ronnie Lies in Wait Is This A PawThe implications for understanding how cats are distributed go far beyond just cat owners wondering what their pets do in their free time. Rather, it can have major implications for understanding the state of wildlife in a given area. As mentioned earlier, cats are one of the most abundant species of carnivores on the planet and are incredibly effective hunters. As such, the sheer number of cats in an area can have a major impact on the local ecosystem due to being an apex predator among the wildlife. Now, cats acting as hunters isn’t a bad thing, per se. After all, it is their tendency to prey on rodents like rats that have helped keep humanity thriving for millennia. This is no exaggeration, with scholars pointing to cats being essential to humanity’s agricultural success, as they protected human grain storage from rodents some 10,000 years ago. In fact, their use to farmers was of such importance that they began to spread as farming did too, and in one case a cat was even found buried in a human grave in Cyprus dating back some 9,500 years ago. But this predatory tendency is not limited to just protecting human grain storage, and in fact has an absolutely astounding ecological impact. It is for this reason, along with fears of disease and getting hurt, that some experts urge cat owners to keep their cats indoors. Your cat might want to stay in its hiding spot. Albrecht says owners trying to lure out their cat should use food. You can even place food just inside the door and then close it once your cat heads back inside. You might also consider leaving food and water outside the home in case the cat comes back at night. A humane trap might be needed when your cat is hiding somewhere more secluded. You can dribble food to the trap with a larger helping within the trap as the primary bait. Cover the trigger plate with a blanket or towel. How To Make A Cat HideawayCats love having small spaces to hide and get away from it all, as it helps them to feel calm and secure. If you have a slightly nervous cat, this could be the perfect refuge for them. Watch our video to find out how you can make a hideaway for your cat using an old t-shirt and a box. If you have more than one cat you will also need to make sure that there are enough options to prevent the more assertive cat from taking up all the locations and excluding the others. If you have young children, its also important to make sure your cat has places to go that arent accessible by them. All cats, irrespective of their age, benefit from having somewhere safe and secure to go when they feel the need, and an elderly cat will be no exception. Older cats can suffer from stiff and painful joints and jumping up onto high places can become difficult or even impossible. Make sure that several ground level places are available and if possible, provide some gradual steps up to their usual high place, just so that they have the choice. Don’t Miss: Where To Watch Ladybug And Cat Noir Do Cats Prefer To Be Inside Or Outside At NightSome felines would much rather be at home when night falls. If your cat feels secure with you and has assigned territory, it will likely stay inside. This way, the cat remains warm and safe from harm. However, some cats prefer to wander at night. This is likely if the cat has frustrated hunting instincts or has not been spayed or neutered. As mentioned, cats enjoy the quiet and solitude that the night brings. If your female cat is in heat, she will want to be outside at night. She will pick up the scent of intact toms that are out patrolling. That why cats in heat yowl and howl after dark as they are trying to attract the attention of a mate. If your cat is male and has not been neutered, it will also be keen to get outside. Intact male cats are always keen to breed. Without humans getting in their way, the night offers the perfect chance to do so. Reggie The Food Thief

Quite by chance, one of our neighbours has a cat that is the exact double of Reggie, and neither of us can tell our cats apart. Some months back, our friend, ‘Bartie’, was sitting in his lounge when his cat came home and promptly scoffed the entire contents of the cat bowl before settling down on his lap for the evening. Bartie commented to his girlfriend what a huge appetite their cat had lately. It was only an hour or so later that Bartie went into their bedroom and saw his cat sitting on top of their wardrobe. He quickly realised that this food thief was a mystery cat that had been regularly eating all the cat food, playing along and sitting on their laps. This mystery cat was actually our cat Reggie. To add further insult to injury, Reggie was also eating at least four or five bowls of food a day at home, so how on earth he isn’t grossly obese I have no idea. If he likes to socialize when company visits your house, he may have simply wandered down to a nearby house and found a way inside. If your cat typically hides and doesnt come out until long after houseguests have departed, she might be hiding somewhere when you think shes lost. Shell be panicked and afraid, so shell stay silent, hopefully hiding away from any predators. Thats why owners have to look hard. They will almost always be hiding, Albrecht says. For instance, the Texas Pet Detectives Association found a missing cat who had hidden in a half-finished patio made of cinderblocks close to its home. The rescuers eventually had to remove some of the cinderblocks to retrieve the feline. Some cats might eventually return to the house because they pass a threshold and need their humanlikely for food or waterbut thats not always the case, she says. If the cat is hiding silently, its best to search late at night when outdoor activity quiets down. Then you might have a better chance of hearing him. Going out in the dead of night might not sound appealing, so another option is deploying wilderness cameras to track the cat in case he ventures out from its hiding space. How To Find A Lost Cat With A MicrochipMany people assume that a cat microchip will help them locate their cat immediately if they go missing. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Unlike a microchip, a GPS cat tracker helps you find your lost cat in minutes by letting you follow their location in real-time. To find a lost cat with a microchip, youll need to wait until someone finds your cat and brings them in to a shelter or vet where the microchip ID can be read. If your contact details on the microchip ID are up to date, and if youre lucky enough to get a call about your missing cat, youll be reunited. You can use the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup or the US Pet Chip Registry to learn more about microchip registry and missing pet identification. While a microchip is a security must-have, it does not actively help you search for a lost cat or guarantee that they will be returned to you. When Should Vaccinations Begin
I Rescued A Cat & Five Newborn Kittens From a Kill Shelter
Kittens from a healthy mother will have passive immunity to some feline diseases before and shortly after birth. Before birth, the mother’s antibodies cross the placenta and enter the kittens’ circulation. Immediately after birth, the mother produces colostrum, or first milk, which is also rich in maternal antibodies. These maternal antibodies protect the kittens against the diseases to which the mother is immune. This explains why it is often recommended to booster the mother’s vaccinations a few months prior to breeding.
Although very protective, maternal antibodies last for only a few weeks after this time, the kitten becomes susceptible to disease. The kitten should receive its first vaccines at about six to eight weeks of age. In order to provide strong immunity, one to three booster vaccines will be required to complete the kitten vaccine series. Kittens should be vaccinated against feline panleukopenia, feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, feline leukemia , rabies, and possibly against Chlamydophila felis. Your veterinarian will discuss your individual cat’s needs at the time of the first visit for vaccinations. The specific vaccines and frequency of vaccination will be based on your cat’s lifestyle and its potential risk of contracting infection. The Importance Of Your First Visit To The VetIts important to take your kitten to the vet soon after they come home with you. Its a great chance to learn more about their health and how to care for them. And its worth getting prepared so you get the most out of it and your kitten has a positive experience.
New Kitten And Mother Cat CareThe first two to three weeks are the most crucial for a mother cat and her newborn kittens. The kittens should be developing rapidly, and if the mother is going to have any postpartum problems, it will happen during that period. Let the mother cat set the pace for your attention. If she has been your pet for a while, she may welcome your visits. A rescued stray or fostered cat may prefer that you stay away. As long as the kittens are nursing frequently and appear to be thriving, they will be OK. Keep the mother cat and her babies in a quiet part of the house a separate room is ideal. Make sure the room is warm enough as kittens are unable to regulate their body temperature when they are only a few days old. The mother cat can keep the babies warm, but if she leaves to eat or use a litter box, the kittens can get cold. Chilling is one of the most critical dangers to newborn kittens. Provide blankets, a heat lamp, or a heating pad to ensure the kittens stay warm. Use a large enough box to comfortably hold the mother cat and her kittens. Stack clean towels to line it. The towels will become soiled quickly as the kittens defecate. It will be easiest to remove the top towel to reveal a clean layer. Keep the mother cat’s litter box, food, and water bowls close by. Make sure you are feeding her a high-quality canned kitten food, supplemented with KMR . These specially formulated foods ensure that a nursing, postpartum mother cat gets the nutrients she needs. It generally occurs when the kittens are three to five weeks old and most often to mothers of large litters. Early signs include restlessness, panting, and loss of attention towards their kittens. It can progress to tremors, muscle spasms, and collapse. This condition can be fatal in thirty to sixty minutes, so your cat needs to see your veterinarian immediately. Prompt treatment with intravenous calcium will reverse the condition. If the queen develops milk fever, her kittens should be weaned as soon as possible. To keep the kittens healthy and make them more attractive to potential adopters, get them the shots that kittens their age need. The kitten stage is really about learning how to be a cat in a wild-type situation. They’re learning how to catch and subdue prey. And a lot of that comes out as anything that’s fast-moving or super interesting they’re going to pounce on and try and hold, or even do that silly little bunny kick that they do with their back legs. Biting and scratching are normal. We just need to teach the kitten how we want them to interact with us throughout our life together. When these sorts of behaviors happen, we need to redirect them to something that we want them to do or avoid these situations overall in managing how we play with our cats. Do Weaned Kittens Need A Special DietDiet is extremely important for a growing kitten. Many commercial foods have been specially formulated to meet the unique nutritional requirements of kittens, and should be fed until 12 months of age. Kitten foods are available in dry and canned formulations.

Reviving and saving 2 baby newborn kittens stucked inside mommy cat body for 3 hours
The first question you need to consider when caring for a newborn kitten is whether the mother is present. If she is, then there is less that you will need to do. Most cats know instinctively how to raise their young and will do all the necessary actions at all the right stages in the kittens life. It is your job to simply make sure they are warm, safe and protected. But if you have found a newborn kitten that doesnt seem to have a mother, you will need to take on all her duties. If this is a stray kitten, do make sure the mother is not coming back before taking the kitten in. If you are not careful, you could separate the mother from her young. Also Check: How To Clean Dried Cat Vomit From Carpet Keep Them Clean And DryIn addition to keeping kittens warm, the mother also spends a significant amount of time keeping them clean. You will need to take on this role by cleaning the kittens after each meal. This is important not only for their health, but also for socialization and for the kittens to learn how to groom themselves as they get older. To clean the kittens, use a slightly damp, warm washcloth and gently rub them all over. Use short strokes similar to a mother cat grooming with her tongue. Make sure each kitten is clean and fully dry before returning it to the enclosure with its litter mates. Kittens under 3 weeks of age will also need to be stimulated to urinate and defecate. To do this, simply use a cotton ball dipped in warm water and gently rub the kittens lower abdomen, rectum, and genitals. This should stimulate the kitten to urinate every time. Kittens should also defecate at least once a day with stimulation. Kittens under three weeks of age should be stimulated to urinate and defecate before and after every meal. At three weeks of age, kittens will begin to urinate and defecate on their own and will no longer need stimulation. At this point, you can place a small litter box with non-clumping litter in the kitten enclosure for the kittens to explore. European Shorthair | Cats 101
The American Bobtail Shorthair is a medium to large cat with a naturally occurring short tail, usually somewhere between 1 to 4 inches in length. Interestingly, each American Bobtail Shorthairs tail is not identical. The size can differ, and they may have kinks, bumps or a curved appearance. The gene that causes this tail mutation is not controllable. Because of this, it is not possible to selectively breed American Bobtails to create kittens with specific tail lengths. So instead, American Bobtail Shorthair litters are a pick and mix, with some having shorter tails than others. American Bobtail Shorthairs have a muscular body with broad chests and prominent shoulders giving them an athletic, wild look. They also have strong hind legs and can jump up to 6 feet. They can weigh anywhere between 7 and 16 pounds once fully grown, with males typically reaching 12 to 16 pounds and females, 7 to 11 pounds. However, they take up to 3 years to reach full maturity. Their short, double coats resemble rabbit fur and consist of a dense, plush outer layer and a soft, downy undercoat. Unfortunately, American Bobtail Shorthair cats are high shedding cats and thus, are not a good choice for those with allergies. Even so, their grooming needs are low as youll only need to brush them once a week or so. American Bobtail Shorthairs can come in any colour or pattern, including black, white, calico, and colour point. Likewise, their large almond-shaped eyes can also come in any shade. Theyre The National Cat Of FinlandThe European Shorthair continued to spread throughout Europe, continually growing in popularity. Eventually, they made an appearance in Sweden, already bred into a lovable cat with many desirable traits. It appears that everywhere this breed showed up, they grew in popularity, thanks to their playful, active natures and incredible hunting abilities. Even today, these cats are widely regarded as one of the most popular breeds in all of Europe. In Finland, theyre even the national cat, showing just how beloved this breed really is. What You Need To Know About Exotic Shorthair HealthAll cats have the potential to develop genetic health problems, just as all people have the potential to inherit diseases. Any breeder who claims that her breed has no health or genetic problems is either lying or is not knowledgeable about the breed. Run, dont walk, from any breeder who does not offer a health guarantee on kittens, who tells you that the breed is 100 percent healthy and has no known problems, or who tells you that her kittens are isolated from the main part of the household for health reasons. Exotics have hereditary health issues that can be a concern, especially if you arent cautious about who you buy from. They include polycystic kidney disease and a tendency to develop calcium oxylate stones in the urinary tract. Responsible breeders take steps to avoid these problems. Exotics should be healthy and vigorous, able to breathe normally and produce only normal amounts of tears. Exotics may have breathing problems, due to their flat faces, and are sensitive to heat. They need to live in air-conditioned comfort, protected from hot weather. Keep in mind that many airlines will not transport them in the cargo bay because of their potential for respiratory distress or even death in stressful conditions. Also Check: Where Did The Cat Meme Come From They Are Descended From Ancient Roman Barn CatsEven though the modern breed originated in Sweden, their lineage can be traced back to the barn cats of Rome who befriended the Roman soldiers. They kept the barns free of mice and developed keen hunting abilities that they passed down to their descendants. Through careful breeding, todays European Shorthair still retains many of the physical characteristics of their ancient Roman ancestors. Size And Physical Characteristics:The European Shorthair is a medium-to-large sized cat, with a sturdy, robust build without appearing cobby. Still, these muscular cats are more stocky in structure than either the British or American Shorthair. They have rather large heads that are not quite round. Their upright ears are medium-sized and a little rounded, possibly with tufts on the end of them. The European Shorthairs eyes are a little on the small side for its face, giving it a shrewd expression. These eyes come in a great variety of colors, including green, amber, and blue. The Shorthairs coat, as the name implies, is short, but also thick and dense to protect the cat from weather and injury. It tends to be a little rougher than the coats of other shorthaired breeds. You can find a large number of fur colors and pattern combinations. Tabbies of all colors are some of the most popular, as are solids in white, cream, red, blue, and black. Tortoiseshell patterns are also possible in black and blue, as is harlequin coloringthat is, a mostly white cat with a few patches of another color. Nowhere is their high intelligence more evident than in their ability to make the most of their living situation. Personalities can vary between cats from outgoing and personable to shy and reserved. Some love to play and socialize, and some take longer to warm up to their family. But even if it takes a bit more time, many European Shorthair cats develop deep, lasting bonds with their owners. They are the ideal outdoor/indoor cat due to their explorative nature and love of the outdoors. Because they are descended from barn cats, they are naturally comfortable having the freedom to go out and hunt. Since this can be dangerous for house cats, many owners set up a perch near a window so their cats can enjoy watching whats happening outside. Even if yours is strictly an indoor cat, be careful not to leave the house door open because they will most likely venture through to see whats on the other side. Aegean Cat VS. European Shorthair Cat
Even though this breed has been around for centuries, there was a lot of confusion surrounding the breed for quite some time. Most of this was due to the similarity in the names of several close breeds, like the British Shorthair and Celtic Shorthair. For many years, these names were often used interchangeably, despite the fact that these are completely separate breeds. Thankfully, many breeders wanted to maintain the differences in these breeds, and the European Shorthair in particular. But it wasnt until 1982 that this breed received true recognition as its own breed, separate from other similar Shorthairs. They were recognized by the Federation Internationale Feline or FIFe, and a set of breed standards was developed. Also Check: How To Help A Teething Kitten Meet The Exotic LonghairThe Exotic Shorthair is a stocky and heavy-boned medium to large cat breed with a large rounded head, full cheeks, small wide-set ears, and large round eyes. Their bodies are relatively short and compact, with strong thick legs and rounded paws with tufts of fur on the toes. Their tails are short and fluffy. Due to their Persian ancestry, these cats are brachycephalic which means they have flat faces and short noses which can predispose them to developing respiratory issues later in life. However, they are loved by families around the world for their teddy bear-like appearance and affectionate natures. Exotic Shorthair cats boast a plush short to medium-length coat with a dense undercoat, which makes them easier to groom than their longhaired Persian cousins. These cats come in a wide variety of colours including black, silver, bi-colour, white, and calico . Their eye colour can also vary but are most commonly gold, green, or blue. These cats are medium-large felines, weighing anything from 3-4.5kg. The History Of Exotic ShorthairsThe Exotic is something of an accidental breed. The original intent of the American Shorthair breeders who got the ball rolling was to breed their cats to Persians in an effort to bring in the silver color and green eyes of that breed. The resulting kittens didnt look like American Shorthairs, but they were very attractive, having the Persian look but with a short, plush coat. Other breeders brought in Burmese or Russian Blues to get the gene for the short coat. The various offspring were bred back to Persians, and a new breed was born: the Exotic Shorthair, or just Exotic. Today the breed standards for the Persian and the Exotic are identical, except for coat length. Both have a sweet expression, short nose, big eyes, and a short, square body, all coming together to make a cuddly doll of a cat. The Exotic is one of the most popular cat breeds, second only to the Persian, according to the Cat Fanciers Association. The British Shorthair breed survived through World War I and is now thriving today. They Have A Big AppetiteHave you ever seen a cat turn up its nose at a dish of unsatisfactory cat food? No such problem with the European Shorthair. Being the descendant of barn cats with strong hunting instincts, they have no problem devouring whatever they can get. While this makes feeding them a simple matter, it means they also tend to gain weight more quickly if there is always food available. Since every cat has different activity levels, its important to watch yours and see if they need more exercise or another type of food. If you have any serious concerns, you can always discuss their diet with your vet for recommendations. They Were Formerly Known As The Celtic Shorthair Until 1982The European Shorthair used to be a general name for all the common, short-haired domestic cats in Europe. This was confusing and caused many different breeds to be lumped into one category. The Celtic Shorthair was one such breed, even though they have different characteristics. It has become common practice in many households to keep the food dish filled at all times, but this often leads to obesityand the host of health problems that accompany it. Temperament & Intelligence Of The European Shorthair CatOne of the best traits about the European Shorthair and part of the reason for their immense popularity is their ability to adapt to just about any situation. This makes the breed extremely versatile, allowing them to fit well with individuals, families, farmers, and more. In truth, European Shorthairs can span a wide range of temperaments and personalities. Some of them are quite shy and dont show much love or trust for strangers and can even take a while to warm up to their families. Others are playful and active from the start, showing loads of affection for family members with plenty of energy to fuel their antics. Many European Shorthairs are inquisitive and outgoing, looking for opportunities to explore and play. Others are much shyer and can show a very reserved personality especially around strangers. But most of these cats can form deep and lasting bonds with their families. Another common trait of this breed is an affinity for the outdoors. They love to spend time outside, though this can sometimes prove dangerous for a housecat. As such, many owners of these felines will setup a perch near a window so their cat can get a taste of the outside without risking their health and wellbeing. Can Cats Eat Blueberries – Tasty or Bad for Your Cat
There are a variety of fruits that are toxic to cats. The worst offenders include grapes, raisins, currants, and sultanas. These facilities breed and raise kittens in high volumes, often in horrendous conditions. Many cats that come from mills suffer abuse, neglect, and long-lasting health problems. A mills focus is to produce and sell as many kittens as possible, so no attention is paid to their emotional and physical needs, their potential homes, or ongoing care. Many cat mill kittens are sold online or in pet stores, but some pose as reputable breeders. It can be difficult to tell if a breeder is legitimate or a pet mill, but here are some tips:

Featured Image Credit: B.Stefanov, Shutterstock Contents Overview The Distinctive Persian Cat CoatPerhaps Persians most distinctive feature is their fur, which is long and soft. And to keep their lustrous coats healthy, it requires active maintenance on the part of the cats owner. Persian cats require daily grooming, Blass says. And not just a once-over. You have to be diligent to remove knots and other debris from their fur because they cant do it on their own. Also Check: When Can Kittens Leave Their Mom Persian Cat Grooming RequirementsDr. Siracusa says that he would spend upwards of an hour daily brushing his Persian cats. Persian undercoats tend to knot very easily, so you have to be sure that the knots dont turn into mats, which can be painful and need to be removed. There are lots of brushes available for cats, but Persian cat owners should look for one thats able to get through their kittys long fur. A double-sided brush, like the JW Pet double-sided cat brush, offers two options if youre unsure which will work best for your cat. Blass adds that keeping Persians fur pristine isnt just a matter of daily brushing. Because Persians coats are so long, sometimes their waste gets stuck when they use the litter box, Blass explains. As a result, they can get really fussy about their litter boxes and may start to eliminate in other places. Blass says that some Persian owners get their Persian cats bellies and back legs shaved to reduce some of the issues that come with cat litter box usage, noting, Trimming these areas can help the cats feel more comfortable. It is recommended to have a professional groomer trim or shave your Persian cats fur instead of doing it at home. Of course, standard grooming also applies to Persian cats, and owners should be equipped to do a quick nail clip if necessary.
