According to Goethe in his theories on color psychology, orange is warmth and gladness. To this day, fast food restaurants will decorate in warm reds and yellows to stimulate appetite. Anyone who knows cats will know that we love bags. Why we love bags is a mystery to most humans and we will keep it that way for now. Anyway, the expression to let the cat out of the bag means: to let out a secret. Examples Of How To Use Let The Cat Out Of The Bag In A Sentence
The Pig In A Poke TheoryOne of the most popular theories as to the origin of the term actually refers to a pig and not a cat. The theory goes that the term originated in a common old English market practice where livestock were often sold and traded in open markets. Occasional sellers would simply throw a live pig into a bag for the buyer to carry home, which was referred to at the time as selling a pig in a poke poke simply being a slang term for a bag or sack. It is hypothesized that occasionally, rather than selling the buyer a pig, a malicious seller would actually toss a feral cat into the bag, all the while warning the buyer not to open the bag until they got home so that the pig didnt get out. Therefore, once the buyer got home and the cat was let out of the bag, the dishonesty of the seller would then become an open secret. As such, another idiom, dont buy a pig in a poke was a way of saying you should always be wary of what you are being sold. Critics have argued that this theory seems implausible for a number of reasons. One of the most obvious is that piglets weigh more than cats, even heavy ones. And one could guess that a feral cat in the 16th century might not have a lot to eat. It is also easy to imagine that an animal held inside a bag would likely be in a state of considerable distress and might foreseeably cry out in anguish, and it is a generally well known fact that cats and pigs make noticeably different sounds. The whole phrase together sounds like, He let the cat outta the bag. Also, if you dont know who told the secret, you can simply say, The cats outta the bag. The Old Cat And The SeaThe first origin story claims the phrase refers to the cat oâ nine tails, a whipping device infamously used by the Royal Navy as an instrument of punishment aboard its ships. The whipâs nine knotted cords could scratch an undisciplined sailorâs back badly, hence its feline nickname. The bag comes into play because the cat, being made of leather, had to be kept in a sack to protect it from drying out in the salty sea air and keep it flexible. Removing a whip from a sack doesnât immediately seem to have anything to do with revealing a secret , but if you think of âletting the cat out of the bagâ as a revelation that results in a punishment, it makes a little more sense. Urban legend clearinghouse Snopes rejects this origin, however, based on the fact that the phrase âlet the cat out of the bagâ was recorded before the term cat oâ nine tails. But the whipâs nickname shows up in print earlier than Snopes claims: In a 1695 play called Love for Love by William Congreve, it is used in a very clear reference to a lashing at sea. The same thing can’t be said about âlet the cat out of the bag,â though, and there aren’t any recorded uses of it in a nautical context. Again, the origins of this one are a little unclear generally, though, its thought to be a nautical phrase. According to a number of online repositories of idiomatic expressions, sailors who felt unwell were sent below deck to protect them from the weather â literally, âunder the weather.â Only one of these databases cites an outside source, though, and that source was published fairly recently in 1983. As such, Im not sure when the first recorded usage of the phrase occurred. This is likely related to the fact that dogs often gnaw on a bone for very long periods of time, even when most of the meat is gone. Dont Miss: How Old Is A 12 Year Old Cat You May Like: What Does It Mean When A Cat Bites You Was There Ever A Literal Cat Let Out Of A Literal BagAccording to Snopes, this origin of the phrase is very unlikely for several reasons. First, it’s unlikely that someone expecting a pig would receive a bag with a cat in it and not immediately know something was wrong pigs and cats don’t resemble or behave like each other at all, even inside a bag. Second, for this phrase to become so well known, the “substitute a cat for a pig” scam would have had to have worked many, many times. Considering the first reason, the second seems even more dubious. The second possible origin of the saying comes from maritime history. The Wessex Museums explains that the British Royal Navy kept a whip known as a “cat-o’-nine-tails” on ships for disciplining unruly or incompetent sailors. The whip was supposedly stored in a red sack, and therefore, when it was extracted for use, the “cat” was out of the “bag.” Once again, however, this origin story is likely a fable, as there’s no proof that cat-o’-nine-tails were actually stored in special sacks, nor that the phrase originated in the naval community. The actual etymology of “the cat’s out of the bag” is unclear. Snopes posits that it’s simply a good metaphor for a secret getting out a cat leaping out of a bag is explosive, surprising, and goes where it wants to go despite the “bag holder’s” wishes. Humor writer Will Rogers was indeed correct when he quipped, per Today I Found Out, “Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than putting it back in.” The Medieval Scam ExplanationThe most heavily cited explanation for why we say let the cat out of the bag dates back to the Middle Ages. As the story goes, shady livestock vendors in medieval marketplaces sought to swindle their buyers. When someone would purchase a pig, the vendor would sneak a cat into the bag instead, cheating the buyer out of the higher price for a pig. It wasnt until the buyer arrived home and, literally, let the cat out of the bag that theyd realize theyd been scammed, hence the phrases association with revealing a secret. English has no shortage of idioms for telling a secretheres why we also call it spilling the beans. This explanation is not outright provenand neither, in fact, is the tale that medieval vendors even regularly did such a switcheroo. But this explanation does have some things going for it. For one thing, per Phrases.org, both the Dutch and German versions of this phrase translate to to buy a cat in a bag, which alludes more directly to a deceitful purchase. And the Spanish translation means to give a cat for a hare, suggesting that it would be rabbits, not pigs, that vendors would switch with the cats. But, then again, the expression pig in a poke, which dates back to the 16th century, also refers to making a deal or purchasing something without fully validating it. These expressions use words in a non-literal way to mean something other than the actual meaning of the individual wordsand theyre often quirky, funny, or perplexing, like spill the beans, break a leg, and take it with a grain of salt. And, notably, a lot of them involve animals, from straight from the horses mouth to let the cat out of the bag. When we say let the cat out of the bag, were not actually talking about a feline that was in a bag but about a secret or surprise that was revealed. Whats the origin of that idiom? And find out why we say dime a dozen as well. Why Does My 11 Year Old Cat Keep Throwing UpThe most common cause of vomiting in older cats is chronic small intestinal disease. This disease is due to two primary causes: Both can result in a cat vomiting anywhere from twice per month to even daily. After several months to years, most cats experience weight loss. Kitties of all ages and breeds may exhibit vomiting as a symptom, but whether or not it is a cause for concern will depend on how often the vomiting occurs and if there is an underlying medical condition thats to blame. Throwing up hairballs is common, and usually nothing to be too worried about. This problem could be as simple as the cat eating too much food in a little time. If you think its hairballs try mixing some hairball food in with the mormal diet. If its hairballs your kitty is vomiting, you can give Vetbasis, a good quality hairball remedy, and try to increase combing her to help remove loose hairs. In a 1760 book review in the London Magazine, the reviewer complained that he wished that the author had not let the cat out of the bag, presumably referring to some kind of plot point. But while the first recorded use of the phrase is pretty straightforward, its origin is not. Unfortunately, its hard to pin down a precise origin for many idioms like these, simply because of the way language evolves. People start using phrases gradually, over time, and theres no concrete historical record of how they came up with that phrase. This is especially the case with figurative expressions, which, by definition, dont literally mean what they say. So theres no definitive consensus as to where it comes from, but there is an explanation that most linguists consider at least somewhat likely. And it actually, literally, involves cats in bags! Make sure you also read up on why we say piqued my interest. Let The Cat Out Of The Bag
English idioms
There are two possible explanations for this one floating around out there, but unfortunately we dont know which of them is correct â or, indeed, if either of them is correct. The first explanation describes it as relating to a punishment for sailors allegedly once upon a time, the British Royal Navy kept a cat o nine tails on each ship stored in a leather bag. When a sailor needed flogging, out came the bag â and out came the whip. As Mental Floss puts it, taking a whip out of a sack doesnt initially seem to have much to do with revealing a secret â but âif you think of letting the cat out of the bag as a revelation that results in punishment, it makes a little more sense. The second alleged origin relates the phrase to livestock fraud. The con pulled involved selling piglets in sacks and swapping the sacks for ones filled with cats after the customer had made the purchase. Snopes, however, discounts both of these potential origins, so alas, we may never know the truth. Also Check: How To Trim Your Cats Claws To Let The Cat Out Of The BagIn the end, a lot of people argue that letting the cat out of the bag is simply just a juicy and highly relatable mental image. Many point out the cats have always featured prominently in English Proverbs, and were commonly kept as mousers in most British households. Therefore, the typical behavior patterns of cats, including their typical penchant for bags, not to mention the shock they often elicited when they jump out of them, would not be unfamiliar to a large swath of the British public in the 18th century and beyond. Regardless of where the term actually came from, one thing is for sure. To quote the inimitable humorist Will Rogers, Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than putting it back in. How to Tell If a Cat Has Been Neutered
To neuter your cat, youll first need to wait until their testicles drop, so it cannot be done as a tiny kitten. The testes are typically formed as part of the abdomen and drop at around 2 months of age. When they drop, they travel through the inguinal rings and into the scrotum. Before the age of two months, the scrotal sack will be completely invisible to the eye. Youll not normally see a penis on display either. Remember to double-check the sex of your kitten. The lack of testicles doesnt necessarily make your cat female. However, if your cat suffers from cryptorchidism then their testicles may take much longer to drop. They may not even drop at all. If your cat has reached 2 months of age and theres still no sign, then you should visit your vet for a consultation. In extreme cases, an ultrasound will be required to determine why the testes cannot reach the scrotal sack. They may need to be removed through more invasive surgery. Role Of Hormones In GrowthUsually, if you dont plan on breeding your cats, youll get your male cat neutered before 1 year of age. For male cats, neutering them before 1-year-old will prevent them from developing:
This is because neutering will remove the testes, which are the main source of testosterone. This hormone is responsible for muscle growth and strength. Testosterone stimulates other growth hormones to be produced. Increased growth hormone levels in a male cat promote higher bone density and bone marrow. This further adds to an unfixed cats size difference, and its why a male could feel heavier than a female cat. It also explains why males have a blockier and sturdier build and more muscle. However, even if male cats are neutered, they tend to have bigger heads than females. According to Reproduction in Domestic Animals, 2 groups of male cats were neutered one group at 7 weeks and the other group at 7 months. Both groups of fixed male cats had a 13% greater bone radius than intact females. It was also found that there was a higher likelihood of fractures in fixed male cats because neutering inhibits the exaggerated bone growth and density seen in unfixed males. Therefore, male cats have larger and thicker bones than females, fixed or unfixed. How To Tell Whether A Male Cat Is FixedIf youve taken a stray male kitten into your home or recently adopted a male cat, the first thing you should do is arrange a veterinary appointment to make sure he gets a proper checkup and has all necessary vaccinations scheduled. Some clinics will not schedule a neutering operation without knowing the cat is vaccinated, or at least current on his rabies vaccine. Before you take the cat in, there are a few cursory investigations you can make to see whether he is already fixed. All these methods can be unreliable to the unpracticed amateur. A tattoo or clipped ear might be your clearest and most obvious indicators that the male cat prowling about your residence cannot get your intact female cat pregnant. As for the genital exam, many intact male cats might have undescended testicles, so even a direct and close-up genital examination can foster a false sense of security. The third approach, looking for a shaved spot around the site of the neutering surgery, is the least effective, because the cats fur may have long since grown back and resumed its wonted volume. Penile spines in Cats Felines, chiefly domestic cats, are well known for having penile spines. Upon removal of a cat’s penis, the spines rake the walls of the female’s vagina, which may serve up as a trigger for ovulation. Many other felid species have penile spines, but they are somewhat petite in jaguars and pumas, and do not happen in margays. Determining The Sex By The Cat’s Physical Features

Wikipedia explains it pretty well, too : Race is the most controversial aspect of Lovecrafts legacy, expressed in many disparaging remarks against the various non-Anglo-Saxon races and cultures in his work. As he grew older, his original Anglo-Saxon racial worldview softened into a classism or elitism which regarded the superior race to include all those self-ennobled through high culture. Dana, a black woman in present day California is abruptly transported to a plantation in Maryland where her ancestors, an enslaved black woman and the white planter who raped her, live. She continues bouncing between present and past, each time the stays in the past getting longer and more dangerous. True to the Sci-Fi and slave narrative forms at its roots, the style is a blend of 19th century sentimentalism and the more lucid prose of science fiction. Seizures in Cats (What You Need to Know)
To diagnose seizures in cats, the vet may need to do different tests. Blood and urine tests are often used to determine extracranial causes. More advanced procedures include x-rays or spinal fluid testing. For intracranial causes, your cat may need to see a vet specialist who will perform an MRI or CT scan, which can help identify brain tumors or other potential issues that led to the seizure. Tests may determine that the cause is unknown, but there are still treatment options for a cat who has seizures without known causes. Seizure Copycats: What Else It Could BeThere are a few medical conditions that closely mimic the clinical signs of a seizure but are, in fact, something entirely different. For instance, a number of different heart problems can cause your cat to suddenly faint and may resemble a petit mal seizure. Additionally, vitamin B deficiencies can also lead to symptoms that closely resemble seizures. Finally, female cats in heat often exhibit signs that pet owners can misunderstand and believe are seizures. For this reason, an accurate diagnosis from a trained professional is imperative in making sure your cat receives the appropriate, needed treatment. Why Is My Cat Still Having Seizures After Starting The MedicationSometimes, treatment will appear to have failed, especially during the first month or two. In many cases, this is because the dosage and timing of the medication need adjustment. The first thing you should do in this case is to check that you are following the instructions on the medication label correctly. After your cat has been on medication for several weeks, your veterinarian may take a blood sample to ensure that your cat has enough medication circulating in the bloodstream. This will allow your veterinarian to determine the appropriate dose of medication. Other causes of treatment failure include specific circumstances, such as stress and progression or worsening of the disease. You May Like: How Often Should A Cat See A Vet What Causes Epileptic Seizures In CatsSeizures in cats can be a symptom of many different health problems and the causes are often categorised as intracranial or extracranial . Examples of intracranial causes include brain inflammation, tumours, and trauma. Extracranial causes can include the ingestion of toxins, kidney disease, liver disease, heart arrhythmias, and disrupted blood sugar regulation, among others. Compared to younger cats, older cats are more likely to have a concurrent health problem such as those listed above. A seizure may otherwise be idiopathic. This is more commonly diagnosed in younger cats and this diagnosis is made when an underlying cause is not identified and the seizure occurs because of a brain malfunction affecting neurotransmission. What To Do After Your Cat Has A SeizureYour cat may be weak, clumsy, or confused after a seizure, so it can be difficult to tell when it is over. If the seizure appears to last longer than five minutes or your cat experiences repeated seizures over five minutes, take them to the vet immediately. Otherwise, check that your cat is stable, and make a call to see the vet as soon as possible. Even for one small seizure, its important to determine the possible cause and start treatments. Untreated seizures can lead to serious or even fatal brain damage. Recommended Reading: Why Does My Cat Lay On Top Of Me How Long Can A Cat Live With SeizuresWe all know that a cat with epilepsy should not be left alone in the house. You must keep the home safe from serious injury, as well as to ensure the safety of your cat. However, some questions have been raised as to how long a cat can live with seizures. Seizures occur when the brain sends electrical signals throughthe skull and into the body. During an attack, seizures will usually occur. The frequency of these attacks can vary from one cat to another. Other behaviors that may indicate a cat may have epilepsy are changes in appetite, inability to sleep or eat, loss of hair, ear twitching, lack of appetite, changes in grooming, and so on. Cats with epilepsy are usually much more active than normal cats. They also tend to show signs of pain rather than displaying typical joy. These behaviors make it hard to determine if your cat is sick or simply experiencing seizures. Seizures can be cured by medication. The medications areadministered by a veterinarian to help ease the attacks. The treatments are to reduce the intensity of the attacks and to help control them. Because of the frequency of the attacks, the medications are generally not taken for long periods of time, although some cases of severe illness may be treated with no change to regular life. Seizures are not life threatening, but it is not healthy either.Cats that have this condition are generally diagnosed at an early age. The cat has no other health problems to suggest the seizure may be caused by something else. How To Treat Seizures In CatsWhen your cat comes out of a seizure and is in a calm state, immediately take her to your veterinarian. If your vets office is closed, proceed to an emergency veterinary clinic. Although the seizure has passed, your cat could have another one, Mears explains. To break a cycle of seizures often requires intravenous medications. Your veterinarian will run diagnostic tests to determine whats causing the seizures. Tests include blood and urine samples and imaging tests like Xrays and MRI. What treatment your veterinarian recommends depends on the underlying cause of seizures. Read Also: What Do You Need To Take Care Of A Cat Cat Epilepsy Life ExpectancyFortunately, most cats recover quite well after a seizure. In some rare and tragic cases, cats can die during a seizure. This is usually due to injuries that happen during the incident. Frequent, repeated seizures can put your cat at greater risk for getting hurt and possibly cause damage to the brain. It’s important to follow your veterinarian’s recommendations to manage the condition and treat any underlying illness. With proper care, cats who have been diagnosed with epilepsy can live a long and happy life. Keep Note Of Symptoms & Duration Of The Seizure
Seizures in a Kitten
While you’re comforting your pet during the recovery from their seizure, try to take notes of symptoms and the duration of the episode. Giving your vet as much information can help your vet determine what type of seizure your cat is suffering from so they can find the best treatment. If your cat has a seizure for longer than three minutes or continues to have seizures with or without recovery, seek veterinary care immediately. You might need to pick your cat up and take them to the vet as soon as possible to prevent brain damage, coma, and death. Don’t Miss: How To Tell Kitten Sex What Do You Do When An Outdated Cat Has A SeizureIf you recognize your cat obtaining a seizure but it stops just after a single to two minutes, then you really should get in touch with your vet and make an appointment to have your cat viewed as shortly as doable. If they are shorter but again-to-back again, or they have extra than 1, you must acquire your cat to the veterinarian immediately. Available Treatment Options For Cat Seizures In Older CatsThe good news is that seizures can be treated better with modern medicine than in the past. The treatment varies on the cause. Seizures caused by toxins will require treatment through helping to remove the toxin from your cats body, potentially through hospitalization and medications. Toxic causes can be suspected by your veterinarian from a thorough history and sometimes through blood and urine testing. When a cat has seizures from diseases outside of the brain, such as liver disease or hyperthyroidism, these conditions will need to be treated to stop the seizures. These diseases are often diagnosed through blood and urine tests and sometimes imaging such as ultrasound and radiographs. When toxins and extracranial causes are eliminated, then your veterinarian will suspect something in the brain. Diagnostic tests such as blood and urine tests will usually be performed before advanced imaging. To see inside the skull, CT or MRI is required. This is usually only available at referral hospitals. When a cause in the brain is suspected or confirmed, then specific treatment can be started. For example, if a brain tumor is found, then radiation therapy might be considered. Where an exact cause isnt found or if seizures cant be managed, there is medication to help prevent seizures. Two examples include phenobarbital and imepitoin. These medications are long-term treatments and should not be stopped without a veterinarians advice. Don’t Miss: Why Do Cats Like To Sit On Paper Clinical Signs Of Epileptic SeizuresIt is important to be aware of 4 characteristic stages of epileptic seizure as it is helpful to differentiate them from nonepileptic seizures. The 4 stages are the prodrome, aura, ictus, and postictal stages. The prodrome is the least consistent. It precedes seizure onset, lasts hours to days, and usually includes restless activity and attentionseeking or anxious behavior.4Aura is a subjective initial feeling of the ictal event and without EEG, it is impossible to differentiate it from the prodrome in animals. It should be emphasized that aura is an ictal phenomenon and can precede an observable seizure. It might contain information about the initial localization of the ED. The ictus is the seizure event itself and is followed by the postictal stage. Postictal changes are more consistent in their presentation than prodrome or auras and can frequently give indications of whether the seizure event was epileptic. Different features have been frequently reported in cats such as aggression, polyphagia, polydipsia, blindness/deafness, and ataxia.4, 7 Clinical signs in the aura, ictus, and postictal stages can have diagnostic value in localizing the origin of the seizure in the brain, although this point needs to be further analyzed in cats. How To Prevent Cat SeizuresIn the vast majority of cases, there is no real way for pet owners to 100% prevent the development of seizures. However, cat owners can ensure their felines health and well-being by scheduling regular checkups with their vet, staying implicitly aware of any changes in their cats behavior that they notice, and acting efficiently and appropriately whenever they have growing concerns about their cats health. Additionally, cat owners can make sure that their feline stays far away from human medications as well as medications formulated for canines. When it comes to preventing future seizures, a cat will typically undergo one to two weeks of anticonvulsant therapy, which is discontinued if the cat has no more seizures during that time. Continuous anticonvulsant therapy is usually recommended if seizures occur every 30 days , or if seizures last for more than five minutes. There are things you can do for her while she is experiencing a seizure and to help her afterward, VetInfo advises. During the episode, don’t attempt to move your cat, but do move furniture and other objects away from her. Other pets in the home should be kept away from your kitty while she is seizing. Your cat’s head and tongue might jerk about involuntarily, but you shouldn’t try to “help” by placing an object in her mouth, such as a spoon, as you could be injured. As the seizure is subsiding and once it is over, speak to your kitty in a calm, relaxed tone. She will be disoriented and need reassurance. Keep your vet apprised of the frequency and severity of your older cat’s seizures he will ask you to bring her in for medical attention if he thinks it’s necessary. This will also make the doctor aware of any changes in her health, and he can adjust her medication accordingly. Always check with your veterinarian before changing your pets diet, medication, or physical activity routines. This information is not a substitute for a vets opinion. Treatment Of Hyperthermia In Older CatsWhen an older cat has hyperthermia, they must be treated effectively by cooling down the body. We can do this by moistening cloths and applying cold compresses, as well as using fluids to hydrate and cool their body internally. In some cases, additional drugs such as antiemetics, gastric protectors or others will be necessary. In the worst cases of shock, your cat will need to be hospitalized. In cats with idiopathic epilepsy, no abnormality will be detected in these tests: this is known as a diagnosis of exclusion for this reason. An accurate diagnosis of the cause of seizures is essential when deciding on treatment. What Causes Seizures In Older Cats
Just like people, some pets will suffer from seizures throughout their lives. Of household pets, dogs are the most likely to have seizures, as many suffer from Idiopathic Epilepsy. But cats can suffer from seizures too especially older cats. While Idiopathic Epilepsy is generally a lifelong condition that appears young in dogs and cats up to about 4 years of age for cats it is far less common in cats than it is in dogs. Only about 25% of cat seizures are attributed to Idiopathic Epilepsy. Most seizures in cats are caused by brain disease and brain damage. Brain damage, of course, sounds scary. But not all brain damage is serious or life-threatening. Minor brain damage may be almost impossible to detect in cats but it can also lead to seizures. What To Do While A Cat Is Having A SeizureAlthough a seizure is a frightening experience for any cat owner, it is important to try to remain calm and not to interfere. Ensure that the cat is not at risk of injuring itself, for example by falling down stairs or off furniture. When the cat starts a seizure, make a note of the time. Regardless of the application, customers expect a light tower to provide continuous, reliable illumination on demand with a minimum of user/operator attention and maintenance downtime. Texas First Rentals Prefers Perkins PowerTexas First Rentals is a sister company of HOLT CAT®, the largest Cat® dealer in the United States. We have a simple rule of thumb that covers most of the equipment we purchase for the fleet, explained Texas First Fleet Manager Taylor Graves. If its Cat equipment its powered by a Cat engine but for the rest, our preference is Perkins engines. The Texas First rental fleet includes Perkins-powered products from major OEMs including Genie®, Sullair®, Allmand® and many other top-tier manufacturers. There are numerous Perkins powered units in the fleet, Taylor says, including light towers, compressors, trenchers, aerial work platforms, welders, pumps, and generators. Taylor cited the 1,000-hour maintenance interval as a major competitive advantage for equipment powered by Perkins engines. warning Consider an oil or gas rig work site that might have anywhere from 10 to 30 light towers running. We have to dispatch a technician to the site to do an oil change, and the rig operator loses the use of a tower while its being serviced. On a 250-hour interval that would happen to every tower every 10 days and on a 500-hour interval just over twice a month. With Perkins 1,000-hour interval it only happens once a month. Thats a huge saving for us and a significant increase in uptime for our customer. We did an extensive cost analysis on the value of a 250-hour maintenance cycle and found that it simply wasnt economically justifiable, Taylor said. warning You May Like: Best Dry Food For Sensitive Stomach Cat Via https://www.lovecatstalk.com/texas-first-rentals-holt-cat/ For Easy Eating: Wet Cat Food
Wet vs. Dry Cat Food: Which is Better? (Pros and Cons)
If you have a young kitten, a cat who has lost some teeth, or a cat with a sensitive stomach, wet cat food could be helpful. Wet cat food makes an easy transition from milk or formula to solids, as it is very easy to eat and easy on young kitty stomachs. Some cats who have lost many teeth and have trouble eating can only eat moist canned foods. Cats with sensitive stomachs or those recovering from diarrhea, constipation, or another illness can benefit from the high moisture content of wet cat food. The increased moisture content makes for easier digestion, reducing hairballs. If your cat is new to wet cat food, it can cause stomach upset or diarrhea. The effect is usually temporary and a result of the transition. Try a slower transition and mix some of your cats previous food with the new food. You may have to experiment to find the wet foods that work best for your cat. Every cats system is a little different! What Nutrients Do Cats NeedBefore diving deep into the debate on wet vs dry cat food, let us first know what nutrients cats need. We know that dogs are omnivorous and they can break down almost any food, whether its vegetable or animal protein. But its wholly different for cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they only require animal-based protein in their diet. So, the question arises why cant cats live on plant protein? Theoretically, cats might get enough protein from plants to exist, but their body needs the amino acid taurine to thrive, which means they need muscle-based meals in their diet. Cats have short digestive systems, meaning they cannot process the complex cellulose found in herbs. Therefore, introducing cellulose to their diet causes digestive problems. The nutrition demand in your cats body can be fulfilled by wet cat food or dry cat food. But, does wet cat food contain more nutrition and moisture content than dry cat food? So which one stands better? Lets find out! Wet Versus Dry Pet Food: Is One Better For Your PetThis article was first published in The Skeptical Inquirer From improving their joints to making fur shine, dog and cat food companies load their products up with bold claims and flashy buzzwords. Even if youve managed to avoid the often-pseudoscientific trends such as raw diets, organic pet food, or vegan kibble, you may still have some questions about the best practices for feeding your feline and canine friends. One of the most fundamental is: Whats better, wet or dry food? The good news is that either type of pet food can provide your animal with the complete nutrition they need to grow, run, play, and be merry. You can be sure of this by checking the statement of nutritional adequacy that will be found on any pet food. In North America, these statements are regulated by the Association of American Feed Control Officials , and there are equivalent authorities in Europe and elsewhere. The statement of nutritional adequacy will read something along the lines of: for all _____ where the blank is filled in with the type of pet this food is for , and the bracketed part may be omitted. If your pets food bears this sentence, then you can be sure that if you follow the feeding guidelines on the package , your pet is receiving all of the calories, nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and protein they need. Many companies will also provide instructions for if you want to feed your pet both wet and dry food. Recommended Reading: Kittens For Sale Memphis Tn What Type Of Food Is Best For Your CatTheres no right or wrong answer to this question, according to Animal Care & Control of NYCs Medical Director, Dr. Stephanie Janeczko D.V.M. Most cat specialists and vets will tell you that the best diet for your cat is a balance of dry and wet cat food. This ensures that your cat is getting the most balanced diet possible, giving them the benefits of both sources. This also keeps your cat intrigued and excited by the multiple flavors and textures they experience each day. Is Wet Food Bad For Cats TeethThe oft-told theory that dry food is better for a cats teeth than wet food is mostly untrue. Dry cat food cleans a cats teeth no better than crackers or cereal clean a humans teeth. Feeding a cat only wet food is not bad for the teeth. However, special dental diets that contain the Veterinary Oral Health Council seal have been proven to support dental health and keep the teeth cleaner. All cats should have their teeth brushed daily, or at least several times a week, with a pet-safe toothpaste and cleaned professionally by the veterinarian at least once a year. For kitties with these health issues, increased fluid intake helps flush out their urinary system. For that reason, many vets recommend canned or wet food for these felines. All you have to do is get a measuring cup and keep it in or near the bag, using it to scoop out the proper amount of food each meal time and then roll the bag back up . Dry food can even be dispensed automatically by a timed feeder, making it even less of a hassle. Meanwhile, canned food is a bit messier and takes a bit more time to serve to your cats. its also harder to store wet food once its been opened. You usually have to wrap it in saran wrap and store it in the fridge, although it can dry out in a day or so. Canned food also goes bad quickly, meaning you cant leave it around for your cat to nibble on throughout the day. Although when it comes to wet food, cats will sometimes scarf it down pretty fast. Cat Food: WET vs DRY – What Is Better? | Facts About Cats
Both dry food and wet food have their merits, but its hard to say which one is better for your cat because it depends on several factors. One of the major deciding factors is the preferences of your cat, which will play a large part in what you choose to feed her. If she refuses to eat a certain food, it is unlikely that you would want to keep buying that type, brand, or flavor. Next, cat parents should consider her overall health. Cats with bad teeth due to old age are better off with food specially designed for them, like Royal Canin Senior, which comes in both a wet and a dry version. But again, this depends on what kind of budget you have. If you can only afford one over the other, it might be better to buy the dry food and soften it with some water. For the most part, foods recommended by your vet for health concerns like digestion issues, allergies, or kidney problems come in both the wet and dry version. As mentioned before, making sure she is getting enough water is extremely important for her health, so if she doesnt drink enough water and a water fountain didnt entice her, it may be necessary to incorporate wet food such as Wellness CORE Signature Selects into her diet. Doing so will be beneficial to both her overall health and your wallet because it will aid in reducing the chance of vet bills due to constipation or kidney problems. Or, if your cat tends to eat her food all at once, mix the two types together. Any amount of wet food can boost your cats overall diet with extra water and protein. If you have a kitten, offer dry and wet food early on. Cats usually develop preferences for taste and texture early in kittenhood. If your kitten eats only dry food, she might turn her nose up at wet food in the future . Also Read: The 8 Best Kitten Foods For all cats, always offer plenty of fresh, clean water. Comparing Advantage, Frontline Plus & Revolution for Cats
Lets take a look at a few things that distinguish the two. We really love Revolution because of its comprehensive protection, but Advantage does have a few specific applications. Both handle fleas and handles their larvae. Interrupting the flea lifecycle helps your pet get over a full-on flea infestation. Both are safe to be applied to pregnant and nursing pets. Both are monthly doses that are easily applied to the skin through a simple applicator tube. You apply the product to the skin down a line across your pets back. The applicator makes it easy to part the hair to get it down to the skin where it can be most effective. Advantage Ii And Frontline Plus For Cats BenefitsFor the efficacy, both formulations actually have the same purpose which is to kill and prevent the fleas or insects from growing and multiplying. For example the fipronil is an insecticide that kills adult fleas in 4-8 hours after application. It is also waterproof but it doesnt mean we can bathe the cat after wearing the solution. – methoprene is an insect growth regulator which is preventing the maturation of fleas eggs or larvae so they wont grow up into adult fleas thus, stopping the life cycle of the insects. On the other hand Advantage II uses an ingredient called imidacloprid which is said to have similar effects to nicotine which is toxic to insects. It is killing fleas by interfering with the transmission of stimuli in the nervous system. Similar to -methoprene, the pyriproxyfen is also disrupting the growth of young insects including fleas, ticks, and ants to stop them from growing. Overall the Advantage II and Frontline Plus for Cats have the same goals and design their formulation to achieve the same result. Our two veterinarians shared their personal product recommendations and shopping advice, which guided us in this review. They agreed that flea and tick treatments should both kill and protect against these bugs and work for at least 30 days. They also shared the favorite treatments they recommend to their own clients. We cross-referenced their advice with dozens of treatments sold across retailers like 1-800-PetMeds, Amazon, Chewy, Petco, and PetSmart, among others. We categorized our search by orals/chews, topicals, collars, sprays, and shampoos. We dismissed sprays and shampoos because they offer protection for only days or a week at a time, and pet owners are more likely to misuse them compared with other products. That left us with eight brands of chews, topicals, and collars for cats or dogs. We selected the four brands that were highly recommended by our experts, that kill and protect against a wide range of pests, and that are sold across retailers at a variety of budgets. NewsA Street Cat Named Bob, Bob the cat, whose special role in James Bowen’s personal journey was written about in bestseller A Street Cat Named Bob, has died, having reached over 14 years of age. Long credited by Bowen with saving his life, Bob died on Monday . Bowen, a recovering addict, first met Bob in 2007 when he found him abandoned and injured. He went on to take care of Bob who in turn gave him a reason to get up each morning. They quickly became inseparable, busking and selling The Big Issue on the streets of London. In 2012 Hodder & Stoughton published Bowen’s first book, A Street Cat Named Bob, telling his and Bobs story. The book became a bestseller, along with its sequels The World According to Bob, A Gift from Bob and The Little Book of Bob. In all the books sold eight million copies in more than 40 languages, according to Hodder, with Nielsen BookScan recording for the UK sales of 1.29 million books for £8.18m. The original story was also made into a film released in 2016 starring Luke Treadaway as Bowen. Bob appeared in the film as himself and will appear in a sequel, “A Gift from Bob”, later this year. Hodder released a statement: “As James and Bob continued to find fans all over the world, Bob led an incredible life meeting well-wishers at book signings, travelling the world and coping with feline fame. He was an extraordinary cat who will be greatly missed.” “I feel like the light has gone out in my life. Ester has been knitting tributes to James and Bob for many years documenting the adventures of Little James and Little Street Cat Bob on their own . She said: I havent seen the complete statue of Bob but I saw the art of Tanya Russell and saw her great work on animal statues. It must have been heartbreaking for James when he saw Bobs statue for the first time a while ago like he was still there with him! The place for the statue is a fantastic choice: near Angel Station and the park they used to visit for breaks from work and for Bob and his business. Ester has already made her own artistic tribute to the statue, which she shared first with The Big Issue. She is planning to make her own pilgrimage to the real Bob statue as soon as Covid restrictions allow. Related Stories My biggest wish was to be at the unveiling but thanks to Covid-19 this is not possible for me, she added. As soon I can travel again from Hannover I will be in London and my first starting point will be Islington Green for the Bob statue. It will be a moment full of feelings, I think, with tears. It is the autobiographical story of James Bowen, who moved to Australia from the UK with his mother in the late 1970s. Changing between many schools, he was often bullied and became a dropout and tearaway who was diagnosed with manic depression, ADHD and schizophrenia. After returning to the UK in the 1990s he became homeless and lived in shelters or on the streets, where he took to using heroin. He was finally given some temporary accommodation in Tottenham, London. While there he came across a ginger cat outside his flat. After noticing the same cat there for a few days in a row he took a closer look and realised it was injured. When he took it to an RSPCA veterinary clinic they discovered that the cat had an infected bite and needed antibiotics. It is crucial with antibiotics to complete a course of treatment so James temporarily took the cat into his flat while trying to identify who owned it. His efforts came to a dead end. James immediately noticed that the cat made a difference: as a homeless man, he had often felt invisible. Living on the streets of London strips away your dignity, your identity your everything, really. Worst of all, it strips away peoples opinions of you. They see you are living on the streets and treat you like a non-person. James Bowen: This Will Be My First Christmas Without Street Cat BobFollowing Street Cat Bobs death, its been a heartbreaking year for James Bowen. He celebrates the remarkable cats legacy with his onscreen alter ego Luke Treadaway Arriving on our screens just when we need it most, Street Cat Bob s new movie A Christmas Gift From Bob is an utterly heart-warming addition to your festive viewing. Of course, it comes at the end of a sad year. Of the many tragedies that have beset 2020, the legendary Street Cat Bob died at the grand old age of 14 in June. His loyal companion James Bowen became a local celebrity in London with Bob when the pair sold The Big Issue, before the 2016 film A Street Cat Named Bob catapulted the pair into global stardom. The Big Issues Laura Kelly sat down with James and his onscreen alter ego Luke Treadaway for a socially distanced reminiscence about the late, great Bob. It will be a bittersweet Christmas without Bob this year, says James, but his final appearance on the silver screen is an appropriate tribute to a truly remarkable cat. A Street Cat Named Bob By James BowenA Street Cat Named Bob is the first of three autobiographical books penned by James Bowen, published in 2010. It was followed by The World According to Bob in 2013 and the latest A Gift from Bob, published His personal story, and that of Bob, is a heart-warming true tale of how a stray cat came to live with a recovering heroin addict. James writes unashamedly about his past, living on the streets of London, or in shelters, without much hope for the future. One day in 2007, in the foyer of his North London apartment block, he finds an injured ginger cat. Despite having insufficient money to feed and look after himself, he takes the cat to the vet and nurses the newly-named Bob back to health. By the time Bob has recovered from his injuries, the two are inseparable and Bob starts to accompany James each day busking on the London streets. Londoners and tourists have a soft spot for animals and Bob and James become very popular. Busking doesnt bring in a steady income so James starts selling The Big Issue. Eventually a local publisher persuades James to write his autobiography, with the help of a ghost writer, at first. To no ones surprise the first book becomes a best seller. I love this series: its a true story, it has a happy ending, and it really explains The Big Issue, its operations and the group of sellers who utterly rely upon sales for their livelihood. Thoroughly recommended for people who like autobiographies, and animal lovers.
