North Shore Animal League America is a pioneer in the no-kill movement, implementing a no-kill policy to ensure that the animals we rescue receive the care and support they need. We are the worlds largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, serving the New York tri-state area and all across the country and around the globe. About North Shore Animal League AmericaNorth Shore Animal League America is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. Since 1944, we have been saving the lives of defenseless dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens over 1,000,000 to date. Our vision is for a future in which all companion animals find responsible, loving homes where they are free from abuse, hunger, fear, and loneliness and receive the care and respect they deserve. Why Should You AdoptDog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life. What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder? When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group. Coding Vs No Coding Required
How I Test our Cat’s Blood Glucose with an AlphaTRAK 2 meter
Some meters require coding strips, meaning you have to put in a specific code to calibrate the results with each new set of testing strips. Its important to enter the correct code otherwise, you will end up with inaccurate results. On the other hand, no coding means the meter calibrates the testing strip for you, and theres no need to enter a code. You simply insert the testing strip, and, viola, the results show on the screen. Most meters nowadays are geared toward a no-code option, but a few still require coding. Resources To Help Clients Monitor CareImportant Safety Information:Vetsulin® should not be used in dogs known to have a systemic allergy to pork or pork products. Vetsulin is contraindicated during periods of hypoglycemia. Keep out of reach of children. As with all insulin products, careful patient monitoring for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia is essential to attain and maintain adequate glycemic control and prevent associated complications. Overdosage can result in profound hypoglycemia and death. The safety and effectiveness of Vetsulin in puppies, breeding, pregnant, and lactating dogs has not been evaluated. See package insert for full information regarding contraindications, warnings, and precautions What To Look For In A Glucose Meter For Your CatTo make sure you pick the right glucose meter for your and your cats needs, keep these important factors in mind. How Accurate Is the Meter? The FDA requires that a home glucose meter needs to be within 20% of a lab test result. Cats with Type 2 Diabetes are less likely to require insulin, and tracking their blood glucose is less about specific numbers and more about trends. This means a high level of accuracy is less important when considering which meter to use. However, if your cat is taking insulin and the results of testing inform the amount you give them, it is better to have the most accurate meters available. Simply being within the range required by the FDA might not be accurate enough. Our top blood glucose meter, the AlphaTRAK 2, has a variance of only 5% and outperforms many high-end human meters. How Complicated Is It to Use?Complex meters have a learning curve, in which they need to be calibrated with control solutions, continually coded to testing strips, and used with special attention to contamination in order to obtain accurate results. Others are pre-calibrated and coded for ease of use. Some meters and strips have been specially designed to decrease contamination while others rely on the user alone. How Reliable Are the Parts? What Is It Going to Cost? Our list of the best cat glucose meters caters to every situation, and you are sure to find the perfect fit for your situation. Read Also: Can I Bathe My Kitten With Dawn Can You Use A Human Glucometer On CatsYou might think that since you have a human glucometer, you dont need to get a pet-specific one for your cat, but that simply isnt true. This has to do with where the glucose is stored in a cats blood cells compared to a humans. The average human has about 58% of their glucose in the plasma and about 42% in the red blood cells. For the average cat, those numbers are closer to 93% of their glucose being in the plasma and about 7% in the red blood cells. So, while you can use a human glucometer on cats, it wont be nearly as effective as a cat-specific one that is more accurate at getting the glucose numbers almost exclusively from plasma. What To Look For If Concerned About Feline Diabetes![]() The most common signs that your cat may have diabetes are:
If you notice these things in your cat, visit the vet. The sooner diabetes is discovered, the sooner your pet can avoid complications. If you only have minor concerns, consider non-invasive glucose monitoring using the KIT4CAT CheckUp Kit. More serious signs of diabetes include walking oddly with their hind legs, extra sleeping, and vomiting. If your cat has any of these signs, book a visit to your vet immediately. You May Like: How Old Is A 20 Year Old Cat In Human Years How Much Blood Do You Need For An Accurate ReadingThe amount of blood that you need to get an accurate reading entirely depends on the testing kit youre using. Some kits require more blood than others to get an accurate reading, and you can find the specific amount of blood requirements for each testing device in the instruction manual. However, for most testing kits, you can get accurate results with 0.3 to 0.5 uL of blood on a test strip. This is an extremely small amount, even if you need the full 0.5 uL, which means fewer pricks for your cat and an easier testing experience for you! What Does A Urine Glucose Test Reveal In CatsA urine glucose test evaluates the amount of glucose in the urine. Normal pets do not have any glucose. Untreated diabetic pets will have glucosuria or pets with renal disease may also have glucosuria. Treated diabetic pets may have some glucose periodically. Many veterinarians have pet owners monitor their diabetic pets by testing the urine for sugar and ketones. This used to be one of the better ways to monitor diabetic patients but some problems do occur. The urine test does not correlate perfectly with the blood sugar value at the time the test is done. Urine takes hours to be produced and the sugar level in the voided urine sample reflects sugar concentration hours before. It is not appropriate to alter the insulin dose based on one urine sugar value. To be accurate, the urine testing needs to be done at least once a day. It is even better if the testing is done even more frequently. If the urine sugar values are consistently high, your veterinarian may recommend increasing the dose of insulin. If the values stay high, other tests may be recommended. Additional tests may include a complete urinalysis, complete blood count, biochemical profile, blood glucose test, or urine ketone test. While every blood glucose meter for cats is slightly different, especially in regard to using control solutions and coding, the main technique is the same for everybody. Below is a really good video by the American Animal Hospital Association: If you are worried about your technique, do not hesitate to visit your vet. Not only can they help you learn how to use your device, but they can also compare its readings to their own, giving you peace of mind. Veterinary brand glucose meters are available as well. Both machines require a small sample of blood to be loaded into the glucose meter, which detects the amount of sugar in the blood. What is most important is that both you and your veterinarian feel comfortable using whichever glucose meter you pick. There are many different types of glucose meters and not all of them work in the same way. But when done with care and with veterinary instructions, you can monitor your pet’s glucose levels at home. The glucose meter is a machine that needs to be checked from time to time to ensure its accuracy. The best way to do this is to bring your dog and your glucose meter to your veterinarianâs office. A small blood sample can be drawn and then run simultaneously on your meter and the clinicâs analyzer . Any discrepancies that are found can then be addressed. Remember, never change your dogâs insulin dose without first talking to your veterinarian. Related entries:Continue reading > > The Problem Of ContaminationBlood Glucose Meters are very sensitive devices that require as little as 0.3ul of blood to create a reading. That is 0.0003 milliliters! One drop of blood should be more than enough to get a good reading, so why do we get told that it sometimes isnt enough? Why does a meter act like it cant read the blood? The answer is contamination. Contamination simply means that something other than blood is in contact with the sensor part of the testing strip. Dirt, sweat, cat hairs, even a fingerprint is enough to cause the sensitive machines to give an error . There are many ways to avoid contamination when testing the blood glucose of our cats, from washing our hands and the spot on the cat we will lance, to knowing the correct technique to put blood onto testing strips. Some blood glucose meters are better than others at helping avoid contamination. Meters that do not need to be calibrated or coded regularly can save steps. Fewer steps, less chance of contamination. Some meters, like the Cera-Pet glucose monitor, have specially designed strips that are less likely to become contaminated. You may be wondering if you can use your own meter on your kitty because that would save time and money, right? Sadly, thats not the case. Human meters do not provide accurate results on pets because the distribution of glucose between plasma and red blood cells is different between humans and pets. If you use a human meter on your cat, you will not get accurate results. Pet meters are designed specifically for pets, so its crucial to invest in the right kind of meter for your feline pal. Glucose in the urine is commonly referred to by veterinarians as glucosuria. The test is generally done by using reagent strip and evaluating the level of color change in the strip which corresponds to different levels of glucose. A urine glucose test is indicated for evaluating pets with signs consistent with diabetes mellitus such as excessive drinking, excessive urination, weight loss, vomiting, and lethargy. It may also be indicated on pets with urinary abnormalities such as increased urine production, increased urinary frequency, or abnormal color to the urine. This test can also be helpful in cases of symptoms in a search for diabetes mellitus. A urine glucose test may be recommended by your veterinarian to monitor therapy of patients being treated with diabetes. There is no real contraindication to performing this test. Even normal results help determine health or exclude certain diseases. Also Check: Teaching Kitten Not To Bite How Do You Use A Glucose MeterGlucose level recordings all require a similar process. Pricking the animals paw, lip, or ear to draw a small drop of blood, putting that blood on a special testing strip, and then inserting that strip into an electronic meter which analyzes the blood. Each step is a factor that needs to be considered when choosing the correct blood glucose meter. Is A Urine Glucose Test Painful To CatsWhether a urine glucose test is painful or not depends on the method by which urine is obtained. Catheterization is uncomfortable in most pets although many male pets tolerate the procedure well. Females are more difficult to catheterize due to the anatomical location of their urethra. If urine is obtained by cystocentesis, the needle insertion through the skin can be associated with brief pain, just as any injection. Don’t Miss: How Long Does A Tuxedo Cat Live What Is A Good Glucose Number For CatsWhen youre checking your cats glucose levels, you need to know the healthy baseline that they should be at. For cats, that level is anywhere between 80 and 120 mg/dL. While that number might not make much sense if youve never had to deal with diabetes before, its what you need to shoot for. If youre still confused about the correct glucose number for your cat or what those numbers mean, we highly recommend reaching out to your cats vet to get the most accurate information and ensure that youre treating your cat correctly! Monitoring With Blood Samples
Performing a blood glucose test on my cat
The term punctual blood samples applies when a limited number of blood samples are taken at different intervals during the day. A regular glucose curve requires blood sampling every 2 hours for a period of 12 to 24 hours. Spot Glucose MeasurementThe first blood sample should be taken early in the morning prior to the first meal and insulin injection. For cats that receive their first injection before the clinic opens, the first measurement should be as close to injection as possible. The second blood sample should be taken approximately 7.5 hours later. When a rapid metabolism is suspected, it can be taken earlier. If the cat receives insulin injections twice a day, blood sampling should be done before each meal. If slight hyperglycemia is detected, but all other parameters suggest improvement and stability, the insulin dose most likely is appropriate as is. To be certain, repeat the tests the next day. If the results confirm that there is reason for concern, perform a serial blood glucose curve before adjusting the insulin dose. PrecautionIt can be impossible to differentiate a Somogyi overswing from rapid metabolism or resistance to insulin with only a few blood samples. Recommended Reading: Blue Buffalo Cat Food Rating Why Cant I Draw BloodIt is extremely unlikely that there is anything wrong with your cat, though some do have thicker skin than others. The most common reason why you cant seem to draw blood is simply that you are too fearful of hurting them, and are therefore not applying enough pressure. If you think you are being firm enough and are still failing to get that much-needed drop of blood, try the following things: When Accuracy Is Important In Monitoring DiabetesA cats blood glucose level can normally be anywhere between 80-120mg/dl. When an accurate reading can be up to 20% away from the actual number, a cat with perfectly normal levels might read on the edge of too low OR too high. While this is not of major concern to a healthy cat, to a cat starting an insulin regime this could be dangerous. Receiving too much insulin can make a cat hypoglycemic and cause immediate problems like weakness, muscle seizures, and even unconsciousness. To avoid this, we need consistent and accurate readings. The most accurate blood glucose meter, backed by multiple scientific studies, is the AlphaTRAK 2. How Is A Urine Glucose Test Done In Cats![]() A urine glucose test is begun with the collection of a urine sample. Urine can be obtained by three methods: Catheterization consists of inserting a flexible plastic tube into the urethra, then up into the bladder . Cystocentesis is a very common method to obtain urine from dogs and cats. This procedure involves introducing a needle directly into the bladder through the body wall. This is a relatively painless and quick procedure. The pet can be lying or standing. The bladder is palpated and a needle is inserted into the bladder. Free catch urine samples are obtained by catching a sample when the pet urinates. This is easy in some pets and quite difficult in others. Plastic containers, ladles, scoops and various objects can be used. This is generally adequate for this test and is the recommended method for home monitoring. Because the urine does not need to be sterile for this test, the urine is generally collected by the easiest and least stressful method. For monitoring cats at home, there are feline urinary glucose detection kits that consist of packets of small pieces of papers that you sprinkle in the litter box. These papers are like small pieces of confetti, odorless and unobtrusive to the cat. The papers acts as reagent strips which changes color when wet indicating the level of glucose in the urine. This is an easy method for doing frequent urine monitoring in cats. Most veterinary hospitals have the equipment to perform a urine glucose test in their hospitals. How to Keep Indoor Cats Happy
When keeping cats indoors, theyre generally much happier if they can watch on whats going on outside. Consider building or purchasing a “catio” or similar enclosure to allow your cat to get a taste of the outside without the risks. A regular fence may not prevent other animals from entering your yard, so you should always be present when you allow your cat outside in your yard. Be sure to cat-proof the yard by checking that your fence has no escape routes and by making toxic plants, garden chemicals and other dangerous objects inaccessible. Keeping Your Cat Happy IndoorsFor cats, the great outdoors are anything but great. Whether they live in the city, in the suburbs, or in the country, outdoor cats face a multitude of risks. They are exposed to contagious diseases, most of which are fatal. Traffic takes a huge toll on free-roaming cats, and while many people believe their pets are street-wise, no cat looks both ways when being chased by another animal. Further dangers include poisons, leg-hold traps, pet theft, and inhumane treatment by cruel people. Outdoor cats cause problems, too. They dig and defecate in neighbors yards, and as predators, they injure and kill a significant number of wild animals. Cats cannot be trained to ignore their natural hunting instincts. The only sure way to safeguard wildlife is to keep cats inside. Many people cut down one side of a large, plastic storage tub to get a larger box. And avoid covered boxes. Most cats dont like them, and they can trap odors inside, making it unpleasant for your pet to enter. Many cats also dont like plastic liners, which can snare cats claws when they dig. This also allows urine to seep under the liner, where it wont be absorbed by the litter and can cause odors. As for self-cleaning litter boxes, it depends. Some cats, especially skittish and large cats, may dislike them. But if your cat doesnt mind, its an option for people who are gone for long periods. This comes without the training that a service animal or therapy must go through. Hospitals, nursing homes, and schools use these animals to reduce stress levels and encourage socialization. Therapy animals can be any kind of pet, but they tend to have a calm temperament and be good with people. An emotional support animal is somewhere in between a service animal and a pet. How to Remove Cat Urine from a Couch! It Works!!
If soap and water are literally the only things you have, its better than nothing, but the problem with cat urine is that it lasts and lasts. Again, it has to do with cat pee chemistry. In cat pee, chemicals like urea and urobilin, and pheromones arent a big deal to clean. Your basic household cleansers like soap and water will clean them effectively, as will other homemade solutions like hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and baking soda. In fact, youll probably hear how these homemade solutions work to clean cat pee. The bottom line, though, is they dont. It doesnt matter. Ammonia, soap, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, or baking soda just cannot break down the uric acid. These cleaners temporarily make your couch smell better, but the minute your couch is exposed to water, like on a humid day, the uric acid salts re-form. Thats why the cat pee smell comes back: it was never gone in the first place. Using An Enzymatic Cleaner

How to de-flea a 6 week old kitten – without using any chemical products – 100% works!
While TNR programs do their best to care for community catsincluding minimizing the risk of infestation and occasionally applying a treatmentthey rely on feral cat caretakers to help make sure these felines are in good shape. So how can you minimize the risk of fleas and ticks in your local colony? The first thing to do, says Richmond, is simple: if youre not already doing so, start putting some food and water out for the cats. Good nutrition can go a long way to keeping cats strong and immune systems robust, she says. It is a good idea to purchase the highest-quality cat food they can afford, to avoid the fillers and artificial ingredients added to lesser-quality brands. But try not to leave food lying around, Burton warns. We suggest not overfeeding your cats and limiting the feeding to 30 minutes at a time, she says. This will prevent leftover food from attracting wildlife, who are notorious flea carriers. Additionally, if caretakers want to go the extra mile, it is possible to treat feral cats with the same types of flea medicine as a house catjust bear in mind that feral cats cannot usually be handled. Burton recommends oral flea medications that can be mixed into the cats food and dont require a prescription. For a more natural option, she suggests supplementing the cats food with about a teaspoon of unprocessed brewer’s yeast daily to help repel fleas. Therefore, cat owners tryand must tryto get rid of fleas on kittens as early as they discover them. How Can You Tell If Your Kitten Has FleasIf your kitten has fleas, it may not be immediately apparent, but there will be signs. Your kitten could have a constant urge to scratch, bite or chew their fur or begin to groom themselves excessively, which should lead you to investigate the cause. To begin checking your cat for fleas, take a closer look at the skin beneath their fur to see if you can spot these tiny black parasites. You may not be able to visibly see the fleas in some instances but instead find little black spots or specks on your kittens skin, which is flea dirt. Tiny little black spots over and under the coat is a subtle indication that your kitten has fleas, so regular brushing and checks for fleas is the key to identification. Once you see moving fleas on their skin, this is a definite indication your kitten has fleas. More indirect clinical signs can be constant itching and hair loss too, says PETstock VET, Dr Natalia Li. To make sure you accurately identify any fleas on your kitten, consider using a fine-tooth comb or flea comb to separate fur methodically, and you may be able to brush some out. Once you have identified these nasty parasites, youll need to get working to remove them from not only your kitten but also the environment. Never shampoo newborn kittens for fleas. You can remove any fleas you see on them manually. Why Are There Fleas In My House![]() You may be dealing with fleas within your home even if you dont have a pet. This often occurs when people move into a house where cats or dogs have previously lived. A flea infestation can occur many months after the initial exposure, as flea eggs can lay dormant for several months before hatching. This could be why your pet-free home is suddenly overrun with fleas. If you do have a pet, use this guide by Tuxedo Cat to ensure you treat the problem as a whole. It is very important to treat your pet as well as your home to handle the problem in its entirety. Treating your pet but not your home, or vice versa, may temporarily reduce the number of fleas seen but wont fully deal with the issue which is why re-infestation occurs. You May Like: Why Do Cats Knead Before Laying Down Treat Your Cat For FleasFirst, treat your cat with a product designed to kill fleas. Bathe your cat or kitten with a specially formulated flea shampoo to kill fleas on contact. Flea sprays can be a good option for water-averse cats. Repeat treatment as needed and recommended on the label. Kitten flea treatment tip: Check the flea treatment label to ensure the product is safe for the age of your kitten. If your kitten is too young, contact your vet to discuss other kitten flea treatment options. After treatment, remove fleas from your cat or kittens coat with a flea comb then, dip the comb in a mixture of dish soap and water to kill any fleas left on the comb. Inspect and comb weekly to monitor the flea infestation on your cat. Fact Check: Essential Oils for Fleas on CatsSome online pet blogs may recommend using essential oils such as tea tree oil as a natural treatment for fleas. However, natural doesnt necessarily mean harmless. Cats are more sensitive to essential oils than humans and undiluted oils can be harmful or even toxic. Essential oils and extracts are not regulated and do not require testing for safety, and it can be difficult to dilute properly. How Can I Tell If My Cat Has FleasThe most common flea that feeds off cats, dogs, and humans is the Ctenocephalides felis. If you observe your cat scratching and aren’t sure if fleas are the cause, you can certainly try to use a flea comb on your cat and observe if tiny black dots are present. These black specks are commonly called “flea dirt,” but in reality, it is the excrement the flea leaves. If you do not see them, it does not mean that they are not there as fleas can be present in small numbers where the flea or flea dirt are simply not visualized. Fleas are very good at hiding on cats. In other cases, the trained eye of a veterinarian may be needed to find these tiny black dots that emerge on the comb. If you find the black specks, smash some with a damp paper towel, and the flea dirt will turn a rust color or red. The red color is residue from your cat’s blood and a warning that cat flea control is necessary. Read Also: Cat Whisker Fell Out Flea Bath For KittensThe easiest and safest way to rid young cats of fleas is to give them a flea bath using dish soap. Dish soap breaks down grease, and because of this, it can break down the waxy exoskeleton of any adult fleas on your kitten’s coat, causing the pests to suffocate in the water. To create a flea bath for your little kitten of any age, simply fill your kitchen sink with an inch or two of warm water and place the kitten inside the sink. Once you’ve wet the kitten’s fur, use a dime-size amount of dish soap to lather up the entire coat. Rub the soap into the legs, feet, tummy, tail, and back of your cat, avoiding his face. Allow the soap to sit for a few minutes before thoroughly rinsing the kitten with warm water. Use A Flea Preventive For Cats
De Flea your Cat: Catch, Kill and Prevent Cat Fleas
Flea preventives help discourage fleas from coming back. Effective flea prevention options include collars, topicals and oral products that can last anywhere from 30 days to eight months. Choose the prevention method that works best for you and your cat. Keep in mind that preventives work best when used regularly and year-round applying for only one or two months per year could leave your pet unprotected. Recommended Reading: Cat Swollen Leg And Paw The Worst Thing You Can Do: NothingA flea infestation can cause anemia in kittens. A flea doesnt actually bite, explains Dr. William Miller Jr., VMD. It sticks its proboscis into the skin and sucks blood. It doesnt take too much of this sucking to cause anemia in a kitten that is carrying innumerable fleas. You dont see this problem very often in adult cats, but its frequently seen in kittens.
Kittens are especially delicate, and some flea treatments are not safe. Follow the advice of your vet. Also, never use medication designed for dogs or adult cats these could be deadly to a kitten. If you are removing fleas from a newborn kitten: Treat the mother. Then remove the fleas from the kitten.
